We recommend that all children receive a yearly physical after they are 2 years of age until they are 18 years of age. We consider these visits to be an important part of maintaining your child’s overall health. At these visits we will assess your child’s growth and development and discuss any concerns you may have. Even for healthy children, check-ups are very important!
Each well visit includes a complete examination, an assessment of your child’s growth and development, and anticipatory guidance regarding safety and common childhood issues. Your child will receive recommended vaccines at the appropriate visit.
Visits are every 2-3 months for the first two years and then annually thereafter. We generally will perform the end of high school/college physical and then start transitioning your young adult over to an internist or family practitioner.
All children should be seen for periodic physicals on the following schedule of ages:
The purpose of these visits is twofold - screening & prevention. During these visits your doctor or nurse practitioner will screen for problems by asking you (and as they get older, your child) questions and by doing a thorough physical exam. Both will focus on issues particularly relevant to the age of your child. The goal of screening is to identify problems early, so we can intervene before they get too big.
During these visits we also engage in a variety of prevention measures. Perhaps the most important of these is administering childhood immunizations against vaccine-preventable illnesses. Prevention also includes providing you and your child anticipatory guidance about diet, development, and a variety of other health related topics. As part of this process, we encourage you to think ahead of time about what questions you may want answered at these visits (it helps to bring a list!).
