ADHD & Learning Difficulties
The most common learning challenges are ADHD and Dyslexia.
What is ADHD?
Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is a common problem in children estimated to be about 10% of the population, and is more common in boys.
How is it Diagnosed?
An evaluation in the office includes reviewing rating scales, report cards, school testing and a neurologic exam. The behavioral rating scales rate 9 features of attention such as trouble focusing and disorganization, and 9 features of hyperactivity, such as fidgeting and excessive talking. It usually starts before age 7 and needs to be a problem in at least 2 domains, such as school and home. Additional testing by your school system or by a learning disabilities or Developmental / Neuropsych team may also be recommended.
What is Dyslexia?
Dyslexia is an auditory and visual processing disorder that makes reading and writing difficult. Common symptoms include reversing of letters, difficulty recognizing letters and learning to read, difficulty with reading comprehension, difficulty with learning to write.
How is it Diagnosed?
An evaluation in the office includes discussing concerns and screenings, report cards, school testing and a neurologic exam. Additional testing by your school system or by a learning disabilities or Developmental / Neuropsych team will also be recommended.
How are they Treated?
Treatment options for ADHD and Learning Disabilities include accommodations in the classroom, occupational therapy and tutoring. Medication may also be discussed for ADHD symptoms.
